How will Opternative encourage comprehensive eye health exams?

Opternative cares deeply about the health and well-being of our patients. Our service is not a replacement for a comprehensive eye health exam, so our doctors recommend that all patients between 18 and 55 years old receive an comprehensive eye health exam at least once every two years. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that healthy patients between 18-50 receive a comprehensive eye health exam at least once every 5-10 years.

Opternative will encourage patient compliance with both sets of guidelines by taking the following steps:

  • Restricting our service to adults 18-55 that state they are asymptomatic and in good health;

  • Not allowing patients to use our annual prescription services four consecutive times within a five-year period without receiving an eye health exam, in accordance with the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s recommendations. Opternative will verify that the health exam was completed with the patient’s eye care professional;

  • Recommending contact wearers get screened for contact-related eye health issues as directed by their ophthalmologist;

  • Educating patients on the importance of their eye health; and

  • Providing referral tools inside our patients’ online accounts that enable them to find and schedule eye health exams with a local eye care provider.
